Work Place Ergonomics

Workplace Ergonomics

Some of us spend a tremendous amount of time at work sitting behind our desks.  Often, our work place is not set up to be ergonomic-friendly, which may result in repetitive strain on muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Let's take a look at a few ways to help avoid painful conditions and have a healthier workplace.

Chair

Most people sit at their desk for the majority of the day. Make sure that your chair is comfortable and ergonomic. This means that your chair should be fully adjustable. Be sure that the height, tilt, and arm rests can be repositioned. The height of your chair should allow you to sit with your lower back against the back of the chair and your feet flat on the floor. Make sure your chair is titled to keep your back upright without slouching or leaning too much. The arm rests should allow your arms to rest naturally and comfortably at a 45 degree angle at your desk without having to strain your wrists.

Monitor

Your computer monitor should be on your desk positioned in front of you at an optimal height. You should not have to strain your neck trying to angle your head upward or downward to see your screen. Further, make sure that your monitor is an appropriate distance from your eyes. Experts recommend about 15 inches between your eyes and the computer screen. Having the monitor positioned correctly can help avoid neck and eye strain.

Lighting

Lighting is often overlooked as a key element to proper workplace ergonomics. Having the right amount of lighting in a space can help avoid painful eye strain. If the lighting is not sufficient, you can supplement your office space with task lighting. It is important to keep lighting sources asymmetric. This will help prevent distracting glare or hard to see shadows.
